Learn the fundamentals of using an overlocker in this beginner-friendly workshop designed for dance parents, dancers, individuals wanting to expand their sewing skills and aspiring costume makers.

Overlockers are an essential tool for creating professional-quality garments and dancewear, but they can often feel intimidating when you first begin. In this 2-hour duo lesson, you'll learn how to confidently set up and use an overlocker while creating your very own simple cushion cover to take home.

You'll gain practical experience using an overlocker, learn professional finishing techniques and build the confidence to continue your sewing journey.

Meet Your Teacher

This class is led by Deanne Cessario - Founder & Head Creative of Tutu Palazzo.

Deanne holds a Bachelor of Education, a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and has over 20 years of teaching experience. With extensive experience creating luxury dancewear and stage costumes, Deanne brings professional industry knowledge into every lesson.

Her passion is helping students understand the techniques behind beautifully finished garments while building confidence in their own creative abilities.

Prerequisities

This class is designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of using an overlocker. No previous experience using an overlocker is required.

However, as this is a beginner class (rather than an absolute beginner class), it is helpful if you already have a basic understanding of how to use a sewing machine.

Before attending, you should be able to:

• Identify the basic parts of a sewing machine
• Independently thread a sewing machine
• Sew basic straight seams using a sewing machine

Please note, this class is not designed to teach you how to set up, familiarise yourself with or navigate a sewing machine. Instead, it focuses on introducing you to the overlocker and teaching you how to confidently use it.

If you've never used a sewing machine before, or would like to build confidence with the basics, we recommend completing our Essential Basics: Introduction to Your Sewing Machine lesson before booking this class.

What You'll Learn

This 2-hour duo lesson will introduce you to the fundamentals of using an overlocker, including:

• Understanding the different parts and functions of an overlocker
• Correct threading techniques
• Understanding tension settings and troubleshooting common issues
• Learning how to safely operate an overlocker
• Creating professional seam finishes
• Working with fabric and understanding stitch settings
• Applying overlocking techniques used in garment construction

During the class, you'll put these skills into practice by creating your own simple cushion cover to take home.
